I was living in Humboldt the last time a big earthquake hit Ferndale. The year was 1992. At that time, the " Victorian Village" of Ferndale, was just hitting it's " Art Village Trend"
Ferndale, quite literally a " cow town" five miles from the Pacific ocean, and separated from civilization by the Eel river bridge had been resurrected by hippie artist of the 60's.
Featuring a Victorian Village main street, the old buildings at that time could not be given away.
Over the years , the art community restored the village as it gained notoriety as a " Must See" on the journey from San Francisco to Eureka California.
. In 92' the earth quake hit 7.2 on the Richter scale, tossing many homes off foundations, as well as throwing brick store fronts onto main street. Water mains and gas pipes were ruptured, a few were injured by falling glass and decorative wood work.
Following the rebuilding of main street as well as the seismic retrofitting of foundations and commercial building structures, Ferndale returned to business as usual.
Thanks to the tougher seismic building code retrofit of Ferndale, minimal damage and injury was sustained in this latest clash with the forces of nature.
If you ever have the opportunity... Visit Ferndale; a friendly cow town and a great place to visit.
Say hi to Joe at the Black Smith shop and Curly at the Village Inn. Tell them that Raymond sent you.
