Victorian splendor on the coast of California.

I was living in Humboldt the last time a big earthquake hit Ferndale. The year was 1992. At that time, the " Victorian Village" of Ferndale, was just hitting it's " Art Village Trend"

Ferndale, quite literally a " cow town" five miles from the Pacific ocean, and separated from civilization by the Eel river bridge had been resurrected by hippie artist of the 60's.

Featuring a Victorian Village main street, the old buildings at that time could not be given away.

Over the years , the art community restored the village as it gained notoriety as a " Must See" on the journey from San Francisco to Eureka California.

. In 92' the earth quake hit 7.2 on the Richter scale, tossing many homes off foundations, as well as throwing brick store fronts onto main street. Water mains and gas pipes were ruptured, a few were injured by falling glass and decorative wood work.

Following the rebuilding of main street as well as the seismic retrofitting of foundations and commercial building structures, Ferndale returned to business as usual.

Thanks to the tougher seismic building code retrofit of Ferndale, minimal damage and injury was sustained in this latest clash with the forces of nature.

If you ever have the opportunity... Visit Ferndale; a friendly cow town and a great place to visit.

Say hi to Joe at the Black Smith shop and Curly at the Village Inn. Tell them that Raymond sent you.

Great little cow town. I had the privilege of living there for awhile. Centerville beach as well as main Street and the historic grave yards are well worth a visit. Good luck with the clean up. If you need a hand, you know how to contact me..

I'll admit when I first saw this news story I thought of Ferndale, WA near the Canadian border.

I didn't even know there is a Ferndale in California, let alone northern California.

How close is it California One?

Hello Mariyam. Hwy 1 does not go through what is refereed to as the California Lost Coast. Highway 101 in this area. Two miles. You can pick it up again south of Mendocino Co., or north of Crescent City as 101 turns into the Oregon Coast.

Thanks for droping by.

I was making my way up California 1 on Christmas Day several years ago and noticed for the first time ever the NOAA tsunami warning/evacuation signs. Within an hour or so upon arriving home in Seattle, the first news reports began coming in about the tragedy in Indonesia caused by that earthquake & tsunami.

I don't usually take the coastal route when traveling between southern California & Seattle however it wasn't the first time I'd done so, yet I never remember seeing those signs. I do remember while in Crescent City, discovering that it's evidently famous due to the 1964 earthquake & resultant tsunami there.

Not always, but every now and then, when Mount Rainier suddenly comes into view, I wonder just how deep of a sleep that mountain is in.

Correction: Curly hasn't been in Ferndale since last October. He's reopened in Fortuna now.

Thank you Jane. Yes, I had heard that he moved into Parloto's. If you see him, give him my best.
